Cerro San Martín, better known as "La Vieja," (the old woman) is located about 15 km from downtown Bariloche and reaches an elevation of 1,275 m (4,183 ft). It offers beautiful views of Lakes Nahuel Huapi, Gutiérrez, and Moreno, as well as the Cerros Catedral and Ventana, among others.
Being a low forest, the sky remains open above us, and at some point when you lift your gaze, you’ll likely see incredible condors soaring toward Lake Nahuel Huapi.
The trekking starts either on the road called “Balcón del Gutiérrez” or at the gate along the route, in a low forest of ñires and pines with a gentle to moderate slope.
Once we reach the summit, you can enjoy the lake views and have lunch before descending.
Depending on the amount of snow, we’ll choose the best spots to put on snowshoes. Some sections may have water, snow, and mud, so waterproof footwear is essential to stay dry and warm. Trekking boots are ideal as they provide ankle protection and keep your feet drier. If wearing trekking shoes, gaiters and snowshoes will be necessary to avoid getting wet and cold.
There are no water refill points, so we must carry enough water for the entire trek. The route is easy, with gentle slopes and no difficult sections. Along the way, you’ll be able to spot Cerro Catedral and its trail to Refugio Frey.
What will you feel as you watch the lakes from the heights while condors cross the winter sky?
