Difficulty: Moderate+
Dates: All year (winter option)

Points of interest: Colonia Suiza, Lengas Forest, Col Valleys, Cerro Tronador Viewpoint, Goye Edge, Goye Summit, Colonia Suiza.
Optional: You can ascend to the summit of Mount Goye and then continue the traverse to Cerro Bella Vista, where it’s possible to reach both summits Goye + Bella Vista in one day.
To reach the ridges of Cerro Goye there are several options. In the first part of the route, we’ll walk along the Forest Trail, surrounded by pine and cypress trees, and then enter a tall forest of coihues. Throughout this section, we’ll be protected from the sun and the wind.
This trail has gentle slopes, and as we gain altitude, we’ll cross small streams and patches of colihue cane that line the sides of the path. After a couple of hours, the trail becomes decorated with blooming amancay flowers, and old lenga forests begin to appear.
This lesser-known mountain is located in Colonia Suiza, and along its trails we often encounter birds and wildflowers that brighten the way. The views from the ridges are monumental.
These old forests are home to woodpeckers that we might be lucky enough to see. The woodpecker is a very characteristic bird of Patagonia, known for its ability to drill into tree trunks. Do you know why its “work” is so valuable to the forest ecosystem?
Once we reach an elevation above 1,400 m, the lengas begin to shrink and take on a shrub-like form due to the harsh weather conditions they endure throughout the year.
We’ll emerge from the forest into the high-Andean zone and reach the ridges of Goye. Without vegetation, we’ll enjoy incredible views of the surrounding mountains and lakes, and the trekking experience will change completely. We’ll head toward the summit and find a good spot to have lunch while keeping an eye on the sky in search of condors.
As we enter the ridges, the trail fades away and we’ll advance over granite rock formations. With a bit of luck, we may see condors soaring through the area.
For the return, we’ll descend along the Scenic Trail, which is steep, with moderate to strong inclines and rocky terrain of various sizes, so it’s essential to have boots with good grip.
This rocky path will reward us with views of the western part of the National Park, where Lake Nahuel Huapi stretches toward the Andes on its way to Chile.
This forested trail, with its gentle slopes, is also ideal for winter trekking with snowshoes for those who want to experience the snowy mountain.
We’ll arrive back in Colonia Suiza to refresh ourselves before returning. And for those looking for a greater physical challenge, it’s possible to extend the journey with the Goye + Bella Vista traverse, finishing in the area known as Tambo Báez.
