An incredible traverse that begins and ends in the Pampa Linda area, starting from there toward Ilón Lagoon, in the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park.

From the very first steps, the trail winds into the lush vegetation of the Andean Patagonian Forest, where coihues, lengas, ñires, and colihue cane form natural tunnels of shade and moisture. The air becomes fresh, the sound of water accompanies the path, and the forest’s damp floor sets the slow, deliberate pace of the hike.

As altitude is gained, the landscape begins to open, revealing the first clearings with deep views into the glacial valleys. Hidden lagoons, green mallines, and rocky slopes alternate along the route, while the imposing presence of Tronador Mountain starts to dominate the horizon.

The name “Tronador” comes from the noise generated by glacier icefalls—a deep, distant sound, much like thunder. This natural roar carries through the valley, accompanying the trekking journey and creating a unique sense of connection with the environment.

During this first day, Ilón Lagoon is reached, a magical spot surrounded by native forest and rocky walls. Along the way, the "Doctor’s Look" (Mirada del Doctor) is encountered, a stunning lookout from which the landscape unfolds in layers of mountains, valleys, and glaciers, offering one of the most memorable scenes of the traverse. At the lagoon, Tronador’s reflection on the still water creates the perfect setting to rest, contemplate, and recharge.

On the second day, the traverse continues toward Agostino Rocca Refuge. The trail becomes more alpine, with sustained climbs crossing scree, gentle ridges, and open sections where wind and sun accompany the journey. Every gained meter broadens the view and allows appreciation of the Tronador massif’s magnitude from different angles.

During the ascent, privileged views of Frías Glacier, the Alerce River valley, and the deep canyons carved by ice thousands of years ago appear. The refuge, one of the most modern in the area, is located at a strategic point offering an extraordinary panorama of the Frías valley and its crystal-clear green lake, creating a striking contrast with Tronador’s dark walls.

Throughout the entire traverse, Tronador appears and disappears among forests and slopes, always present like a silent giant. One only needs to pay attention; its presence is a constant reminder of the geological force that shaped this Patagonian landscape.

On the last day, there is the option to take a short walk around the refuge, explore nearby viewpoints, or simply rest and enjoy the high-mountain surroundings. Then begins the return to Pampa Linda, a prolonged descent crossing new environments and offering different perspectives of the valley.

During the descent, crystal-clear streams, small waterfalls, and sections of closed forest are crossed, once again enveloping the trail in a fresh, humid atmosphere. Every bend in the path offers new vistas, closing the traverse with a sense of a complete, diverse, and deeply Patagonian journey.

For those wishing to extend the experience, it is possible to reverse the refuge order and complete the Paso de las Nubes Multi-Day Trek, descending to Puerto Frías to spend the night at the historic Hotel Puerto Blest. From there, additional trekkings such as Lago Ortiz Basualdo or a visit to Los Cántaros Waterfall can be added, further expanding the range of landscapes and ecosystems.

Is it possible to feel the power of Tronador and the magic of the Andean forest with every step of this traverse?
